INTRODUCTION
It's been quite a film
year in 2012 -- not the greatest but very far from terrible.
When it comes to picking ten films that stood out in 2012 or any busy film year
-- it is never easy. Bela Tarr's "The Turin Horse" is such a strong and
masterful effort. Spike Lee's
"Red Hook Summer" has deep resonance, affection
and joy despite some of its characters' unforgivable sins. Judith Hill's
music, Bruce Hornsby's tunes and actor Clarke Peters are all excellent, as is
Kerwin Devonish's cinematography in Mr. Lee's film.
"Cloud Atlas", crafted by the Wachowskis and Tom Twyker, is the year's most
ambitious film, a 2012 Tree Of Life as it envisions lives in continuums and
evolutions.
"The Comedy", Rick Alverson's slight yet astute
commentary about an anti-social wealthy white man in New York City is
provocative and necessary.
"Killer Joe", William Friedkin's film made my
list then suddenly didn't. Robert Zemeckis's
"Flight",
featuring Denzel Washington's most nuanced work in a decade or more, came close
too.
Each of the films making my ten best list of 2012 are films that arrive at or
try to uncover beautiful and disturbing truths about human beings. They
are often about what justice does or doesn't mean. They are often based on
true stories. At any rate, all ten, I think, attempt to access or assess
something greater or universal if not always hopeful, about the reality of the
human condition: that genuine change can happen for one or for all, for better
and for worse.
