BERNIE
Fresh, funny and thought-provoking, "Bernie" is a brilliant comedy-drama
directed by Richard Linklater, based on the true story of Bernie Tiede, a
personal attendant in Carthage, Texas who killed the employer he had a close
relationship with. "Bernie" entertains the fine line between the revered
and the reviled. Bernie, superbly played by Jack Black (one of his best
performances), is the cat's meow around Carthage. He does good things for
everyone. Until he doesn't. Mr. Linklater's film is hilarious.
Co-written by Skip Hollandsworth, writer of the Texas Monthly magazine story
"Bernie" is based on, the script's dialogue crackles. Matthew McConaughey
is amusing as the town's publicity-hungry district attorney. Shirley
MacLaine is also great as Bernie's employer. Yet it is the real-life
townsfolk of Carthage who steal the film. You can't possibly script their
performances, which are the best thing about "Bernie". Released in the
U.S. in April 2012. One hour and 39 minutes. On Blu-Ray/DVD.
