THE CENTRAL PARK
FIVE
The picture above, from Wilson Morales' website BlackFilm.com, is the way I
prefer to see these innocent gentlemen, whom with one other were convicted in
1990 of a crime they did not commit. (Several years ago I contributed work
to an appeal of the convictions of two of the men. I also appear in this
resounding and sobering documentary -- briefly in archival footage.) Ken
Burns, his daughter Sarah Burns, and her husband David McMahon direct this
penetrating look at the racism, hysteria and media frenzy surrounding the five
men following the rape of a white female jogger in Central Park in New York City
in April 1989. The question of trial by media looms large, as does the
transitioning climate in New York of crime, racial tension, and blatant racism
in the media, society and criminal justice system. A brutal coming of age
story if ever there was one. Released in the U.S. in November
2012. One hour and 58 minutes. Distributor: IFC Films/Sundance
Selects.
