"The Dark Knight" grips us from start to finish -- especially on IMAX -- and Christopher Nolan crafts the best Batman film ever brought to the big screen.  With plenty of help from the late Heath Ledger, larger than life here as the most maniacal and menacing Joker ever.  The Caped Crusader faces his own doubts about his ability to fight crime in Gotham City and the notion that he is an heroic figure in a post-9/11/01 America.  The Joker plays a forceful role on Batman's conscience, and Christian Bale wrestles well once again as Batman/Bruce Wayne.  Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart are standouts as Lieutenant Gordon and Harvey Dent respectively.  With Maggie Gyllenhaal and the return of acting veterans Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine for their second "Batman" go-arounds.  Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard combine for a rousing music score that pulses with power and precision throughout.
