LINCOLN

Powered by Daniel Day-Lewis's astonishing work as the 16th U.S. president, Steven Spielberg's majestic "Lincoln" stands tall as a grand, flawed work that rises to the occasion in its deliberations, theater and unmistakable message of compromise out of necessity.  Tony Kushner's terrific screenplay, based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team Of Rivals hits all the right notes despite omissions of Frederick Douglass, a key figure in the slavery abolitionist movement.  There's no mistaking however, the timelessness and tone of "Lincoln", which resists the director's usual nods to hagiography and overture to emotional excess.  "Lincoln" is filled with memorable performances including David Strathairn, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.  Released in the U.S. in November 2012.  Two hours and thirty minutes.  Distributor: Dreamworks Pictures/Touchstone Pictures.  Original review
