ONCE UPON A TIME IN

ANATOLIA

An exquisite, little-seen film in the U.S., Nuri Bilge Ceylan's epic police procedural from Turkey details the frailty of investigation and by larger extents, human beings.  Paced as a meditation of the aftermath of a crime, "Once Upon A Time In Anatolia" is magnificent in many respects, and, had it been an English language film, might well be on a lot of ten best lists this year.  Mr. Ceylan tracks the protocol and personalities of the police who transport a man suspected of a murder to a police precinct.  "Anatolia" is best when it mines the complexities of cops and criminals and the journeys they take.  This film percolates with tension.  Filled with cues and clues, the final minutes are stunning.  Excellent work from the entire cast, including Muhammet Uzuner.  Released in the U.S. in January 2012.  Two hours and thirty-eight minutes.  In Turkish with English subtitles.  On Blu-Ray/DVD.  Distributor: Cinema Guild.  Original review
