Tonight was world premiere night for Ava DuVernay's "A Wrinkle In Time", which opens officially in the U.S. and Canada on March 9 (with Thursday night screenings on March 8.)

The scene was the Graumann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, steps away from the Dolby Theater (site of this Sunday's Oscars).  The film, written by Jennifer Lee, is based Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal-winning book first published in 1962.

The director spoke on the film's "blue carpet" about inclusion in film, noting that her film has the same characters "in different skins".

"It's about time that we see different kinds of representations of people.  We show people that everyone belongs...Everyone has a seat at the table.  Everyone comes into the story.  Why not?  Why would you not want it that way?", commented Ms. DuVernay to an interviewer on the carpet.

"It's so much better to party when you have all different kinds of people," said Ms. DuVernay, whose cast includes Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon.

Many celebrities and filmmakers were out in numbers to support Ms. DuVernay and her new film.  Lena Waithe, J.J. Abrams, Katie McGrath, "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler, Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle and the "Wrinkle In Time" cast including Oprah Winfrey and lead actor Storm Reid, as the film's young heroine.

"A Wrinkle In Time" will be released in IMAX, IMAX 3D, 35MM, 2D and large screen formats.

Additional cast members for Ms. DuVernay's first feature film since "Selma": Chris Pine and Zach Galafianakis.
