In a matter of hours early on Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills, California, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will announce its nominees for Oscar for the 2017 film year.

From what has transpired so far this awards season it appears safe to predict that the "frontrunner" films "The Shape Of Water" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" will be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.  The formbook suggests that both Greta Gerwig ("Lady Bird") and Jordan Peele ("Get Out") will be nominated for Best Director.  But where Best Picture is concerned what of "Phantom Thread"?  What of "The Post"?  Neither film is likely to be nominated for its directing even though both were directed very well.

Then there's "Mudbound" and "Call Me By Your Name".  Where will those films stand with Oscar tomorrow morning?  Both are popular with film critics but so far awards voters have given them the cold shoulder.

The Academy is in a virtual no-win situation on Tuesday morning: if it nominates the same films in the same categories as both the Golden Globes and SAG Awards have it will be seen as a predictable, lazy exercise in what looks like the inevitable come March 4.  (A showdown between "Shape" and "Billboards".)  If the Academy thinks outside the box and comes up with radically different nominees they will be viewed as upsetting the apple cart.  I still think the latter, even at this eleventh hour, is a strong possibility.

Every predicator looks extraordinarily good tonight but how will they look tomorrow morning?  Will Oscars Be So White?  Or will there be inclusion?  Only Oscar knows.

Below, in the meantime, are links to my predictions of the nominees and winners in major Oscar categories (which I initially published in the first week of January 2018.)  We'll see in a matter of hours.

Best Picture  Best Director  Best Actress  Best Actor  Best Supporting Actress  Best Supporting Actor
