Today in a press release the NAACP praised the Academy's inclusion and diversity
among its nominees and winners on Sunday, making special note of "the positive
characters of color that are increasingly being portrayed on the big screen."
Long the sole awards show to represent and honor Black people and people of
color in general, the NAACP's Image Awards produced winners back in January who
were also nominated, or won Oscars on Sunday.
Leon W. Russell, Chairman of the NAACP National Board Of Directors said in part,
"The NAACP is delighted that so many of the Oscar nominees reflect the
exceptional work of people of color.
"The importance of having and recognizing diversity both in front of and behind
the camera can't be overstated. To have so many Oscar nominees who were
also this year's image Awards winners is a true testament ot the work we've been
doing. We also congratulate Image Award winner Jordan Peele for being only
the third person in Academy Awards history (90 years - this writer's words in
parentheses) to be nominated for directing, writing and producting in the same
year, and for being the first Black screenwriter to win an Oscar in the best
original screenplay category."
The NAACP Image Awards is held every January. Most recently Jordan Peele
won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay ("Get
Out") at the Image Awards. The Awards are televised live on TV
One.
