Ahead of Monday's live televised portion of the 49th NAACP Image Awards tonight
in Los Angeles a number of Image Awards were awarded to winners in film,
television, writing and various other categories. This story looks at the
film awardees.
Jordan Peele had a good night, picking up two Image Awards. For his
phenomenal smash hit film
"Get Out"
he was awarded Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture and Oustanding
Writing in a Motion Picture.
It is very likely Mr. Peele will receive more accolades from the NAACP on Monday
night for "Get Out", which has gathered steam this awards season on the back of
wins at the Critics Choice Awards,
the African-American Film Critics Association
and on many critics lists, as well as nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen
Actors Guild, Producers Guild Of America and the
Directors Guild Of America.
Elsewhere in the film categories tonight Tiffany Haddish won Outstanding
Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work in
"Girls Trip",
while Idris Elba received Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for
his role in "Thor:
Ragnarok".
In something of a surprise, Kathryn Bigelow's
"Detroit" won Outstanding Independent Motion
Picture over Dee Rees's
"Mudbound". By contrast not surprisingly "STEP" won Outstanding
Documentary.
The remaining awards to be awarded at the 49th NAACP Image Awards will be on
Monday at 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific time, live from Pasadena, California on the
TV One network.
Anthony Anderson will once again host the Image Awards.
