Ryan Coogler's superhero action-drama
"Black Panther" made history over the holiday
weekend in North America with a staggering record $242 million box office haul
for a February weekend in the U.S. and Canada. Figures released by
Exhibitor Relations showed that the Marvel Studios release had an incredible
$50,501 per-screen average, capturing 74.5% of the viewers of the top 12
box-office-grossing movies over the weekend in the U.S. and Canada.
Excluding Monday's President's Day holiday, "Black Panther" grossed over $202
million, a record opening for a conventional weekend in February.
"Black Panther", about the title superhero and the fictional African nation
Wakanda and the threats it faces, is the highest opening film directed by a
Black filmmaker. Soon Mr. Coogler's film will become the biggest
money-making film ever by a Black director. No Marvel film has had an
opening this big over a holiday weekend.
Chadwick Boseman stars as the title character, which is based on the Marvel
Comics stories of the 1960s. "Black Panther" also stars Lupita Nyong'o,
Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke,
Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Florence Kasumba and Andy Serkis.
"Black Panther" has a great chance to surpass "Avatar" as the world's
highest-grossing film ever. In its first four days alone "Black Panther"
has grossed $426.7 million worldwide.
